ESP32-S3 Handheld Development Tool with Display, Controls and GPIO Expansion

The DSTIKE HackHeld32S3, formerly known as the HackHeld32 II, is a compact open-source handheld development platform designed for makers, embedded developers, wireless technology education, game development, and authorized 2.4 GHz network assessment.

It combines an ESP32-S3 N16R8 module, 1.54-inch ST7789 color display, eight physical buttons, built-in buzzer, WS2812B RGB LED, six external GPIO connections, AXP2101 power management, a rechargeable 1000mAh battery, and USB-C connectivity in a transparent handheld enclosure.

The HackHeld32S3 supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. It does not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

What Is It?

The HackHeld32S3 is an all-in-one ESP32-S3 development device with an integrated display, controls, sound output, battery, charging circuit, RGB indicator, and external GPIO connections.

The ESP32-S3 N16R8 provides:

  • Dual-core processing

  • 16MB flash memory

  • 8MB PSRAM

  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi

  • Bluetooth Low Energy

  • Native USB support

The supplied Deauther32 firmware provides an interface for wireless scanning, signal monitoring, and controlled assessment on compatible 2.4 GHz networks.

Developers can also replace the supplied firmware and use the hardware for games, IoT projects, portable sensor interfaces, menu-driven applications, and other ESP32-S3 projects.

Why Did We Make It?

Basic ESP32 development boards normally require users to connect a separate display, buttons, buzzer, battery, charging circuit, and enclosure before creating a portable project.

The HackHeld32S3 integrates these components into one compact platform:

  • Color display for menus and graphics

  • Eight buttons for navigation and interaction

  • Buzzer for sound and alerts

  • Programmable RGB LED

  • Rechargeable battery and power management

  • Six external GPIO connections

  • Transparent protective enclosure

  • USB-C programming and charging

This gives developers a ready-made handheld interface while still allowing custom firmware and hardware expansion.

What Makes It Special?

  • ESP32-S3 N16R8 Platform: Combines a dual-core processor with 16MB flash memory and 8MB PSRAM.

  • 1.54-Inch Color Display: The ST7789 screen provides a clear interface for menus, graphics, network information, games, and sensor data.

  • Eight Physical Buttons: Includes UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, A, B, MENU UP, and MENU DOWN controls.

  • Built-In Buzzer: Provides sound effects, button feedback, alarms, and programmable notifications.

  • Six External GPIO Connections: Add compatible sensors, LEDs, buttons, and other modules.

  • WS2812B RGB LED: Provides programmable status feedback and visual effects.

  • AXP2101 Power Management: Controls the rechargeable battery system and portable power operation.

  • Built-In 1000mAh Battery: Supports portable use without requiring an external battery holder.

  • USB-C Connectivity: Supports charging, firmware uploading, and serial communication.

  • Transparent Enclosure: Protects the electronics while keeping the internal hardware visible.

  • Preloaded Firmware: Arrives with compatible Deauther32 firmware installed.

  • Open-Source Development: Supports custom Arduino and ESP-IDF firmware.
